i was just quoted $925 for a plain chuppah rental! Please share any recommendations for how i could find something considerably more reasonable in the santa rosa/sonoma/sf bay area.
Perhaps a local synagogue can lend you one? The synagogue I belong to is doing that for me...however, it is not a freestanding chuppah, it is four long poles with a tallis streched across it that will be held by our family members (the poles are long enough to rest on the ground). My florist is going to decorate the tops of the poles with some simple flowers. It's a different look/feel than the freestanding kind, but it is 100% free and a nice way to involve family in the ceremony...
Call around to other florists. I got two quotes from DC area florists for $250 and $150 respectively. Also, if you just want poles with a tallit over the top (you can have chuppah bearers carry it) you can buy one online for $220 or make your own.
I have helped make two for a wedding in August and for one is September. I can help you out if you want to drop me an email I live in the BayArea, when do you need this by?

I realize this is late for a reply but here are some ideas:
- Many synagogues have chuppah poles, I would say most in fact. You may be able to just user theirs if you're being married by the rabbi there.
- Buy 8' curtain rods! One solid piece is best--I had a friend use something that had to be screwed together in the middle or something and they did not hold up during the ceremony.
